Eee! Look what the post brought today: “Aster an Eee! Look what the post brought today: “Aster and the Mixed Up Magic” by Thom Pico and Karensac from @rhkidsgraphic. Just LOOK at those colours—those gorgeous landscapes—the charming mix of art styles to denote past and present—not to mention this awesome gag involving a sheep guard.

So much fun! Looking forward to more—set in JAPAN!

The things I forget to post: last Friday I visited The things I forget to post: last Friday I visited the @jpfsydney to see their exhibition on sentō/public baths. I liked the artwork of bathhouse stamps enlarged—particularly this one with a cat and noren. It was interesting learning about some of the history and how public bathhouses became tiled during the Meiji period (before, they were all wood), and how people use them and feel about them now. The exhibition is on until 22 May, so see it while you can.

Celebrating my one-year (ish) streak on @duolingo! Celebrating my one-year (ish) streak on @duolingo!
I finished “Amelia Unabridged” by Ashley Schum I finished “Amelia Unabridged” by Ashley Schumacher over the weekend. I don’t normally preorder books by authors I’m unfamiliar with, but I liked the premise of this one immediately, it was recommended for fans of Jandy Nelson (which I am!), and I was given a book gift card for Christmas. (Best gift ever, IMHO!)

This is a YA novel about a girl named Amelia who became best friends with Jenna after Amelia’s family imploded. At the same time, she falls in love with the work of fantasy author NE Endsley and his Orman Chronicles, which accompany both Amelia and Jenna as they grow up. At the end of high school, the girls travel specially to a book festival to meet Endsley—only to have him cancel at the very last minute. Two weeks later, Jenna dies in a car crash in Ireland, and sometime after that, Amelia receives an anonymous gift of a limited edition hardback of one of Endsley’s books.

That’s the bones of the story, but of course it fails to capture its richness—the friendship between the two girls, the grief and guilt that Amelia feels and how it changes her relationship to reading, and the beautiful nuances of what happens next as she tries to solve the mystery behind the gifted book. Woven through it all are many threads to do with growing up and figuring out what to do with one’s life, the way books change us and care for us, the roots behind the writing of them, and the things people do to overcome suffering. Oh, and there’s an absolutely AWESOME bookstore at the heart of it all.

I did wish that a few things were handled a bit better (eg the character of Alex). But overall, I very much enjoyed this one and was sad when it ended.

Writing morning. Noticed that I was getting mild Writing morning.

Noticed that I was getting mild headaches from my giant monitor—perhaps because it will only display at 1080px because that’s the maximum for HDMI cables. (*SIGH*.) Given I use it for both work and writing, I figured it was worth investing in a DisplayPort cable to up the resolution. Fortunately they make them for USB-C now. (Thinking about all the changes in technology during my lifetime is also giving me headaches; why do I never have the RIGHT cable?!) Anyway, because of that, I am taking the opportunity to use my _other_ desk and go a little old school with pen and paper.

(Yes, I do indeed have a Hello Kitty KISS journal ...)

The things I forget to Instagram: I happened to be The things I forget to Instagram: I happened to be in @kinokuniya_sydney before Christmas and was delighted to see the exhibition space was occupied with art from @charlessantoso’s “Happy Hippo”! It was so cool seeing the evolution of the art from sketches to finished art. Sometime later, I was reading it to Miss 6 (we have it to her for Christmas) and listening to her giggle over the story, and it made me happy all over again. #amreading #childrensbooks #childrensbookillustration

Moving house and COVID have disrupted my normal ro Moving house and COVID have disrupted my normal routines. But this week, I’ve managed to clear some time to get back into it, and the new house means I actually have dedicated space!

I’m sketching out a new novel this morning. (What happened to the old one, you say? Still in progress, but I think I need to do this one first because they’re related.) I have a very rough outline of this one and I _think_ it works. The sketching is to find out whether it does really work. Anyway, let’s get to it.

Trigger warning: blood! Last @lifebloodau donatio Trigger warning: blood!

Last @lifebloodau donation before Christmas! The nurse who was looking after me angled the machine in such a way that meant I could watch it work, & then explained how it works to me, which was super interesting. The plasma is separated from the blood & fills the bag at the bottom. Then the rest of the blood goes back into me. I also get the saline at the very end (remembered to bring my blanket for that part! It gets very cold 🥶 At one stage, I had four heat packs on my body.)

I also love this portable cup holder he placed on the arm of my chair to stop my water bottle from falling off. So clever!

Apparently donations slow down between Christmas & New Year, so if you are able to donate, then is a good time!
